Summer's Secret Depletion: Why Your Body Knows Before Your Brain Does

Summer is supposed to be the easy season. Long days, lots of light, time to exhale.

And yet, so many of us arrive at August running on empty, sunburnt and somehow still totally exhausted, wondering why we don't feel as good as we look.

Here's what I think is happening: we're living almost entirely in our heads.

We're planning, scrolling, catching up, keeping up. We're thinking about how tired we are rather than actually resting. We're managing our wellbeing as a concept, rather than feeling it as a reality.

And all the while, our body is quietly sending signals we've stopped knowing how to read.

The body is extraordinarily wise. I say this a lot in my classes! It holds tension before we name it as stress. It braces before we admit we're anxious. It slows down and grows heavy long before our mind is ready to acknowledge that something needs to change.

The invitation, especially in summer, when the pace can fool us... is to come down out of your head and get into your body. Not to fix it or push through it, but to actually listen to it!

This is something I come back to again and again in my practice, both as a teacher and as a human being. Whether it's through slow, intentional movement, conscious breathwork, or simply lying on the floor and doing nothing for five minutes... the shift from thinking to feeling is one of the most powerful things you can do for your wellbeing.

Recent research into Dru Yoga found that participants developed a much greater ability to notice and respond to their own physical tension just by spending time mindfully in their bodies.

Your body is not the problem. It's the messenger. And it's been trying to reach you.

So this summer, before you push on through, pause. Take a breath. Drop your shoulders. Feel your feet on the floor... do not rush from here.
